5 BNGN option 1.3 Wireless Broadband.png

A wireless broadband service such as 3G and LTE connects homes, business and government premises via a radio link between the customer’s location and the service provider’s facility.

Brunei has two types of wireless broadband services;

3G(HSPA)

3G is the third generation of mobile broadband telecommunication technology which allows for an information transfer rate of at least 200 kilobits per second. Later 3G releases, often called 3.5G and 3.75G offered significantly improved speeds of up to 7.2 Megabits per second, this allowed for mobile broadband access to devices such as smartphones and laptops.

3G networks allow higher data transmission rates than the previous 2G standard and therefore enables services such as voice and video calling, file transmission, mobile and fixed internet access and more.

4G LTE

4G (fourth generation) is the fourth generation standard of mobile broadband telecommunication technology which succeeds 3G. It is designed to provide up to 10 times the speed of 3G networks. In addition to the services offered by 3G, 4G allows a more robust mobile broadband experience with applications like high-definition mobile TV and cloud computing.

4G technology makes use of radio base stations to send data ‘over the air’ and communicate with a wide variety of 4G ready devices such as mobile phones and tablets.

There are currently two 4G standards being deployed worldwide which are Mobile WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. Brunei Darussalam currently utilizes the LTE standard which saw a nationwide rollout in 2014.
